The Juicy Life Podcast - Episode 2: An Intro to Ayurveda
Ayurveda : Understanding the Doshas and the Elements of Life
If you’ve been around yoga for a while, chances are you’ve heard the word Ayurveda floating around in conversations, classes, or wellness spaces. Maybe it sounded a little mysterious or maybe you wondered how it actually applies to your everyday life.
The beautiful thing about Ayurveda is that it’s incredibly practical.
Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that has been around for over 4,000 years — which, in my opinion, is one of the reasons we can trust its wisdom. It has stood the test of time because it works. Often called the “sister science” to yoga, Ayurveda helps us better understand ourselves, our bodies, and the rhythms of life around us.
The word Ayurveda translates to “the knowledge of life.”
Ayur means life, and veda means knowledge or wisdom.
At its core, Ayurveda is the study of how life works.
The Five Elements of Ayurveda
Ayurveda teaches that everything in nature — including us — is made up of five elements:
Earth
Water
Fire
Air
Ether (space)
These elements combine together to create energetic patterns called doshas.
And here’s where it gets really fascinating: these doshas don’t just exist in our bodies. They show up everywhere.
You can see them in the seasons, times of day, foods, weather, activities, emotions, personalities and even the products we put on our skin.
Because everything shares the same elemental building blocks, Ayurveda gives us a framework for understanding balance in every area of life.
The Three Doshas
Kapha: Earth + Water
Kapha energy is grounding, stable, heavy, slow, and nourishing.
Think:
Thick, rich, comforting foods
Cozy rainy days
Deep sleep
Calm, steady personalities
Kapha gives structure and stability, but when it becomes excessive, it can feel sluggish, stuck, or overly heavy.
You’ll often notice kapha energy showing up during late winter and early spring, or during slower, quieter periods in life. What This Podcast Will Explore
Pitta: Fire + Water
Pitta is the energy of transformation.
This dosha is hot, sharp, driven, and intense. It governs digestion, metabolism, ambition, and focus.
Think:
Summer heat
Midday sunshine
Spicy foods
Passionate, fiery personalities
Pitta energy helps us take action and create change. But too much pitta can lead to burnout, irritability, overheating, or frustration.
If you’ve ever felt “fired up” emotionally or physically, you’ve experienced pitta energy.
Vata: Air + Ether
Vata is movement, creativity, and flow.
This energy is light, quick, dry, subtle, and expansive.
Think:
Windy autumn days
Creative inspiration
Constant movement
Fast-paced thoughts
Vata governs movement in the body and mind, and when balanced, it brings creativity, excitement, and adaptability. When out of balance, it can feel anxious, scattered, overwhelmed, or depleted.
Vata energy is often associated with people who are imaginative, expressive, and constantly on the go.
Why Ayurveda Matters
One of the most powerful things about Ayurveda is that it teaches us that balance is not one-size-fits-all.
What feels nourishing and grounding for one person may feel completely aggravating for another.
Ayurveda invites us to become more aware of:
What we eat
How we move
How we rest
How we respond to stress
The environments we place ourselves in
It’s not about perfection. It’s about awareness.
When we begin to understand the doshas and how they show up in our lives, we can start making choices that support more balance, energy, and ease.
What’s Next?
In upcoming episodes, we’ll continue unpacking how the doshas show up in daily life — through food, routines, seasons, movement, and even relationships.
Because once you begin to see Ayurveda through this lens, you start realizing:
it’s everywhere.
And more importantly, it gives you tools to better understand yourself.
If this episode sparked your curiosity, stay tuned — we’re just getting started on this Ayurvedic journey together.
